Spotlight on designer Bonnie Sullivan

Bonnie Sullivan is the designer behind the beloved Woolies Flannel collections for Maywood Studio, has built a creative career rooted in the beauty of handcraft. Her designs draw inspiration from wool appliqué, penny rugs, folk art, quilting, and the textures and details found in everyday life.

This summer has brought several exciting milestones for Bonnie. Her quilts were featured in a special exhibit that the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, showcasing her work in both wool and cotton flannel. We're excited to share a few photos from the exhibit and celebrate the quilts and creative traditions that have inspired her work over the years.

And there is plenty more to look forward to from Bonnie! Her newest holiday collection, Snowtop Mountain Flannel is in shops now and we are looking forward to the Patchwork Woolies Flannel and Penny Flower Flannel fabric collections shipping this fall and winter.

A Special Exhibit at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show

Bonnie’s quilts were recently featured in a special exhibit at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, bringing together the rich textures, layers, and handcraft details that have become hallmarks of her work.

Her quilts beautifully demonstrate the versatility of flannel and wool, combining traditional techniques with her distinctive folk-art-inspired style.

Bonnie has always enjoyed working with texture and layering different materials. Wool and cotton flannel can work beautifully together, while decorative stitches add dimension and personality to a project.

Coming in September: Patchwork Woolies Flannel

The Patchwork Woolies Flannel collection draws on Bonnie’s love of traditional crazy quilt designs and the decorative stitches that give them so much character. She especially enjoys the flexibility of this style, where motifs, applique, and stitching can be added wherever inspiration strikes.

Bonnie’s favorite stitch is the fly stitch, and she loves the way traditional crazy quilt techniques allow makers to experiment and personalize their projects.

The idea behind Patchwork Woolies goes back more than a decade, when Bonnie originally created the pattern that inspired the collection. Now, that design inspiration is being brought to life in Woolies Flannel.

Coming in December: Penny Flower Flannel

Penny Flower Flannel is inspired by Bonnie's early penny rug designs and is another collection that takes us back to the beginning of Bonnie's creative Journey.

Bonnie has been designing fabric with Maywood Studio for more than 20 years. Her first Quilt Market was in 2002, and it was shortly afterward that she designed her first fabric collection.

At the time, Bonnie was making penny rugs and incorporating wool into much of her work. When the opportunity came to translate the look and feel of wool into cotton flannel, the connection was natural.

Many of her designs continue to reflect the folk-art motifs, textures, and handcraft traditions that have inspired her throughout her career. She still enjoys working with wool, cotton, stitching, appliqué, and most of all, making things.

“I honestly do not know what I would do if I was not making something,” Bonnie says.

That creative curiosity extends beyond quilting. Bonnie enjoys experimenting with new crafts alongside a group of creative friends, where their relaxed “crafternoon” gatherings have included everything from quilling and needle felting to decoupage. She also finds inspiration through travel, collecting details and experiences that may eventually find their way into her creative work.
