The Making of Colorblock Party Workshop

The Making of Colorblock Party Workshop

Every year, the Maywood Studio design team comes together to experiment, collaborate, and create a truly unique fabric collection. Colorblock Party is the vibrant result of one such workshop, a playful fusion of miniature quilt blocks, printmaking, and color, born from our shared love of pattern and craft.

Colorblock Party Workshop Process

Inspired by the repeating nature of quilt blocks and the tactile art of relief printing, we explored a hands-on printmaking technique called collagraphy: a type of relief print that involves building textured plates from layered paperboard. Each designer started with a hand-drawn 2" motif, drawing inspiration from vintage textiles, quilt blocks, and geometric forms. These sketches were transformed into printing plates, carefully cut, layered, and inked with a brayer, then printed onto fabric squares using a miniature, 3D-printed printing press.

The result is a rich library of tiny prints with a handmade feel. These mini blocks became the foundation for Colorblock Party, a rainbow-hued collection that shifts from soft pastels to bold brights, inviting makers to play with contrast, scale, and color in their own creative way.
