PDX Carpet Fabric Adventures
It’s not every day that a carpet becomes a cultural icon, but for travelers passing through the Port of Portland, or PDX as it's known, the airport’s signature carpet design has captured the imagination in ways no one could have predicted. Once a simple part of the airport’s décor, the famous teal patterned carpet has become a beloved symbol of Portland’s quirky charm. And now, it’s found a new life – as fabric!
It's been so exciting to see the incredible creative projects made with our PDX carpet fabric! Recently, we had the pleasure of partnering with the Portland Modern Quilt Guild for a member challenge featuring this fun fabric. The participants came up with everything from quilts to accessories, and even hats—showcasing the versatility of the fabric in the most imaginative ways. We’re thrilled to share the three winning projects with you, which are pictured here:
Top row: Travel Checklist by Jeanne Johnson (original design)
Bottom left: Quilted Trucker Hat by Chris Marchini of Rose City Originals, featuring an appliqué file from alldayembroidery.com
Bottom right: Bag by Brittany Scott, with a front view that beautifully captures the perspective of a plane window.
We reached out to quilt designer Wendy Sheppard and asked her to design a unique quilt made with our iconic PDX carpet fabric. Meet the Carry On Quilt! Wendy combined the PDX carpet fabric with Kimberbell Solids to imagine an airport scene and the cutest carry-on bags. A limited-edition kit for the Carry On Quilt is available exclusively through Bear Creek Quilting Company and you can view and download the pattern for free on our website.
Read more about the PDX carpet fabric on the All Pacific NW Shop Hop blog and get the fabric at your favorite independent quilt shops and wherever you buy your quilting, sewing, and craft supplies. We can't wait to see what you make!
