An Interview with Designer Monique Jacobs
We recently sat down with Monique Jacobs to talk about her newest fabric collection, Operetta. From the moment she started describing the inspiration behind the prints, it was clear how much thought and care went into every design. “When I’m working on a new collection, I look at color combinations, prints, wallpaper, tiles, carpet, anything that catches my eye,” Monique explained. “This collection was especially inspired by faded florals, damask wallpaper, and worn carpets.”
Monique says she loves every part of the design process. She enjoys selecting colors, creating motifs, and designing quilts using the various prints in the collection. When asked which print feels the most personal, she pointed to the main print with all the motifs. “It feels so nostalgic and romantic,” she said.
One of Monique’s favorite projects with this collection is revisiting her very first quilt pattern, Flying Around the World (above). Originally designed in 2004, the pattern was meant to look complex but be easy to make. “I designed it to work with fabric lines that include multiple colorways and lights that could really pop, and Operetta fit it perfectly,” she shared.
The ombre fabrics are a highlight of Operetta, and Monique approaches designing with them thoughtfully. “I see ombres as a medium,” she explained. “You can achieve high or low contrast, which makes them so interesting to work with." With the Skyline quilt (below) she "wanted to preserve the light so it could move up and down through the quilt. Adding the print extends that movement and adds visual interest. The damask print in between highlights the vertical lines. I really let the fabric dictate the flow of the quilt.” Her Skyline quilt pattern is available to view and download for free with the Get Started button.
Looking ahead, Monique is planning quilt-alongs for Skyline and Flying Around the World starting in January. After the holidays, she’ll host Facebook Live events, sew-alongs, and plenty of giveaways.
